Buying a new property, whether for residential or commercial purposes, is a significant investment with its share of excitement and responsibilities. While you might be focused on the property's aesthetics, location, and price, an equally crucial factor should not be overlooked: the potential presence of mold. Mold can be hidden and detrimental to both your health and your investment. In this article, we will delve into the importance of mold checks before purchasing a property and how water damage remediation and mold damage repair play a critical role in making an informed and healthy decision.
The Hidden Dangers of Mold
Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in damp and humid environments. It can grow indoors on various surfaces, including walls, ceilings, floors, and even inside ventilation systems. While mold spores are everywhere in the air, they can become a problem when they find a suitable environment to grow. Mold poses health risks to occupants, especially those with allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems. Common symptoms of mold exposure include respiratory issues, skin irritations, and allergic reactions.
Why Checking for Mold is Important: A Pre-Purchase Assessment
When considering a property purchase, mold checks are a crucial step that should not be overlooked. A thorough mold assessment can provide insights into the property's condition, help you identify potential problems, and enable you to make the right choices concerning a potential purchase. Here's why mold checks matter:
Ensuring the health and safety of future occupants should be a top priority. Mold can lead to various health issues, and by conducting mold checks, you can identify any existing problems and take necessary actions.
Addressing mold issues can be expensive, involving water damage restoration and mold remediation efforts. Detecting mold before purchasing a property can save you from unexpected financial burdens.
Suppose mold is detected during a pre-purchase assessment. In that case, you can use this information to negotiate the property's price or request that the current owner addresses the issue before finalizing the deal.
Knowing about mold problems allows you to plan for necessary repairs and remediation, ensuring a smooth transition into your new property.
Water Damage and Mold: An Interconnected Issue
Mold growth often follows water damage. If a property has experienced water leaks, flooding, or inadequate ventilation, it creates an environment conducive to mold growth. Here's how water damage and mold are interconnected:
Water Intrusion. Water damage occurs when water infiltrates a property, often through leaks, floods, or poor drainage.
Humidity and Dampness. Water damage increases humidity and dampness, creating ideal conditions for mold growth.
Mold Colonization. Mold spores in the air can settle and grow in areas with excess moisture, leading to mold colonization.
Mold Checks and Assessments: A Comprehensive Approach
When conducting mold checks, it is essential to employ a comprehensive approach to ensure accurate results. Here's what a professional mold assessment may involve:
- Visual Inspection
Experienced professionals visually inspect the property for signs of mold growth, water damage, and areas of excessive or unusual moisture. This inspection can reveal visible mold, water stains, and other indicators of potential mold issues.
- Moisture Assessment
Mold thrives in moist environments. Professionals use moisture meters and sensors to identify areas with elevated moisture levels, which could indicate hidden mold growth.
- Air Quality Testing
Air quality testing involves collecting air samples from different areas of the property and analyzing them for the presence of mold spores. This testing can identify the type and concentration of mold spores in the air.
- Surface Sampling
Surface samples are collected from suspected mold growth areas. These samples are analyzed to determine the type of mold present and its concentration.
Addressing Mold Issues: Water Damage Remediation and Mold Damage Repair
If mold is detected during a pre-purchase assessment, addressing the issue becomes a priority. Two essential steps in this process are water damage remediation and mold damage repair.
Water damage remediation involves identifying and addressing the source of water intrusion. Whether it is fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or addressing drainage issues, preventing water intrusion is key to preventing mold growth.
Mold damage repair involves removing mold-contaminated materials and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting affected areas. Professionals use specialized equipment and techniques to ensure that mold growth is completely eliminated.

Back to School Countdown: Deep Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Mold Remediation for College Dorms
7/30/2023 (Permalink)
Image of classroom
As summer comes to an end, thousands of new college students across Nashville and the country are eagerly preparing to set up residence on their campuses. The remaining students are getting ready to return to the colleges and universities they still call home. Along with the excitement of meeting friends and embarking on new academic journeys, students (and parents) have expectations for the cleanliness of dorms and other residence facilities. College administrations need to ensure that dorms are safe and healthy living environments for every resident.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused academic institutions to experience firsthand the necessity of employing skilled residential cleaning services in all living areas to help keep students healthy and prevent the spread of the virus. Deep cleaning, disinfecting, and mold remediation by commercial general cleaning services continue to play a crucial role in maintaining an environment conducive to the well-being of students. In this article, we will explore why these practices are necessary for colleges and universities and how they contribute to safe and healthy learning and living environment for students.
Deep Cleaning: Clearing the Dust and Dirt
Deep cleaning is the first step in the process of preparing dormitories for the upcoming academic year. Over the summer months, dorm rooms can accumulate dust, dirt, and debris and harbor stale, stagnant air. Thoroughly cleaning every corner of the rooms, including floors, walls, ceilings, windows, window treatments, furniture, and upholstery, helps eliminate potential allergens and pathogens, thus creating a fresh atmosphere. Deep cleaning not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the dorms but also improves air quality, which is crucial for all students, especially those with respiratory conditions, allergies, and other compromising health issues.
Disinfecting: Eliminating Harmful Microorganisms
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, disinfection has gained even greater importance in maintaining a safe and healthy environment. College dorms are communal spaces where students live in close proximity, making them more susceptible to spreading viruses and bacteria. Regular disinfection of shared spaces like common areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and study rooms helps reduce the risk of contracting infectious diseases like COVID-19, common colds, and the flu. Using effective disinfectants and following proper cleaning protocols helps ensure that college dorms are hygienic spaces where students can thrive and avoid illness.
Mold Remediation: Tackling Hidden Threats
Mold is a persistent and potentially harmful issue that can plague college dorms and other student residences. Mold thrives in moist environments, and dormitories with poor ventilation or past water damage are particularly susceptible for mold colonies to take hold. The presence of mold can lead to various health problems, including allergies, respiratory issues, infections, and even neurological issues. College administrations must prioritize mold remediation to protect the health and well-being of students from this often invisible yet insidious problem. Conducting thorough inspections, promptly addressing water leaks, and implementing effective remediation strategies are essential to combating mold growth.
Health and Well-being: A Prerequisite for Learning
Creating a healthy living environment is not only about physical cleanliness but also about students' overall well-being. When dormitories are clean and free from allergens, mold, and other potential health hazards, students are less likely to experience health issues that could interfere with their studies and prevent them from engaging in social interactions. By investing in deep cleaning, disinfecting, and mold remediation from a commercial general cleaning service, colleges demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of their students and create an environment conducive to learning and personal growth.
Psychological Impact: Promoting Mental Health
The impact of a clean and well-maintained living space extends beyond physical health. College dorms serve as a home away from home for many students, and the state of their living environment can significantly influence their mental well-being. A cluttered, damaged, or unclean living space can contribute to stress, anxiety, and a sense of unease, especially regarding fears about becoming exposed to viruses or other pathogens. Conversely, a clean and organized dormitory fosters a sense of calm and safety, promotes mental wellness, and allows students to focus on their academic and personal development.
Preventative Measures: Nipping Issues in the Bud
When colleges and universities invest in hiring commercial general cleaning services that focus on deep cleaning, disinfecting, and mold remediation, it demonstrates to students, parents, faculty, and staff that they are valued and essential to the campus community. Employing residential cleaning services is a practical and proactive approach to prevent potential issues from escalating. By conducting routine cleaning and promptly addressing situations, colleges can save significant time and resources in the long run. Preventative measures protect the health of students and everyone else on the campus and safeguard the structural integrity of the buildings, preventing costly repairs and renovations down the line.
As colleges and universities gear up for the new academic year, prioritizing deep cleaning, disinfecting, and mold remediation in all dorms and student residences is paramount. These practices contribute to creating a safe, healthy, and conducive living environment for students and staff. By investing in these measures, colleges demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of their students and set the stage for a successful and fulfilling college experience. As students return to their dorms, they can focus on their studies, build lasting friendships, and create cherished memories, knowing their living space is safe, clean, sanitized, and mold-free.
What is your college or university's approach toward preparing dorms for the upcoming semesters? To ensure that everyone on your campus resides in a deeply cleaned and healthy space, call SERVPRO® of East Nashville, Madison, and Goodlettsville today and schedule deep cleaning and disinfecting services before the students move in and the school year begins.
What a Flood Leaves Behind: Finding Mold in Unexpected Places

What a Flood Leaves Behind: Finding Mold in Unexpected Places
Any homeowner or property owner will tell you about the worry that comes with days of seemingly endless rain. Almost nothing can feel quite as catastrophic as a flood. But the rains eventually have to stop, and the floodwaters must recede. The aftermath, though, is most undoubtedly overwhelming. Now it is time to start cleaning up and rebuilding. But before diving into water damage remediation, it is crucial to check for mold and repair mold damage.
Floodwaters can leave behind moisture that allows mold to grow in hidden, unexpected places. If left unchecked, mold can pose serious health risks and further damage your home or property. Here's what to know about emergency water damage restoration and mold cleanup after a flood.
Where Mold Lurks After Flooding
Mold needs moisture to grow, and floodwaters create the perfect wet environment for mold to flourish unchecked. It is obvious to address water-logged carpets, drywall, and other expansive or visible surfaces for mold. But it is easy to overlook other areas where floodwaters may have seeped in and left lingering moisture. Water damage repair contractors know where to look when examining a property hit by flooding. They are aware of these sneaky spots:
- Behind baseboards and crown molding: Water can seep into cracks and crevices, creating the damp conditions mold loves. Baseboards are especially prone to absorbing moisture like a wick.
- Inside ductwork: If floodwaters reached vents, moisture could have traveled through HVAC systems and condensed inside ducts. This standing water allows mold colonies to thrive out of sight.
- Behind furniture: If furniture had remained in place during flooding, the backsides of cabinets, dressers, and bookshelves pressed against walls can hide moisture and possible mold growth.
- Inside walls: Drywall soaks up floodwater like a sponge. Even if the surface looks dry, moisture trapped within wall cavities provides a breeding ground for unseen mold, not to mention making the drywall unstable.
- Under floors: Flooding can warp floors and open gaps that allow moisture underneath. Subfloors, insulation, and crawl spaces under a home's or building’s structure are at risk for hidden mold issues.
- In attics: Through leaks in the roof or ventilation systems, attics can accumulate moisture that spurs mold growth in insulation, roof decking, and other materials. A musty odor in the attic is a red flag and should be addressed immediately.
Commercial water damage services are essential for finding, repairing, and remediating water damage and mold growth after flooding strikes your property.
Signs of Mold Infestation
Even if you do not see obvious mold growth, there are other warning signs of contamination. A few things to watch for include for:
- A musty, earthy smell, especially when air conditioning or heat kicks on
- Discolored spots or cottony-looking growths on surfaces
- Warping floors or discoloration along baseboards and walls
- Water stains on ceiling tiles or around vents
Hiring professional water damage remediation experts should be your first call if you suspect hidden mold. They have specialized equipment and expertise to detect dampness and take samples for mold testing if needed.
Health Dangers of Mold Exposure
It does not take long for mold to take hold and permeate homes and buildings, thus releasing spores into the air. Inhaling or touching mold spores can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, respiratory infections, and other health issues. Mold releases mycotoxins that can suppress the immune system and even cause neurological problems in some cases. Babies, children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune or respiratory systems are most at risk from mold-related health issues. Small amounts of mold, especially toxic black mold, and repairing mold damage should be addressed promptly.
Professional Water Damage Restoration and Mold Remediation
Extensive mold contamination should be handled by professional water damage specialists trained in mold remediation. Remediators use protective gear and containment techniques to avoid spreading spores throughout the home or building during cleanup. They employ the latest antimicrobial agents, air scrubbers, dehumidifiers, and other methods to thoroughly clean, disinfect, and dry all materials with mold growth. Air ducts may also need cleaning to remove any fungal debris. Professional mold remediation removes the root cause of moisture accumulation and prevents regrowth.
The aftermath of flooding poses many challenges for homeowners and property owners. But addressing moisture damage and hidden mold growth should be a top priority to protect your home, building, and health from lingering issues exacerbated by flooding. SERVPRO® of East Nashville, Madison, and Goodlettsville will carefully inspect all areas exposed to floodwaters, watch for signs of contamination, and take prompt action against any mold problems discovered.

The Problems with Mold and How to Avoid Them
5/10/2023 (Permalink)
Mold in the corner of the room
No one likes to see mold in their homes, but mold spores are everywhere and unavoidable. Often problems begin before they even become visible. These microorganisms can take advantage of persistent dampness in a home, whether from water damage, standing water, or steam. Those mold spores can become a serious health problem without expert mold remediation and removal work. Mold can also physically damage structural and porous materials, requiring them to be removed, leading to a major expense. Preventing a mold outbreak to avoid health issues and home damage is always best. Still, if a problem develops, you may need expert mold remediation help to ensure your environment is healthy and safe. SERVPRO of East Nashville offers everything you need for mold cleanup.
Why Mold Remediation is Important
Mold causes a variety of problems in residential homes or commercial buildings. Mold does not make distinctions as it will locate the moisture it needs to facilitate its growth. Its dark, fuzzy stains are unsightly, of course, but its ugly appearance is the least serious thing about the spread of mold. The mold spores can cause a range of symptoms in healthy adults and children – watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, and respiratory problems. Someone with asthma or a compromised immune system can be in serious trouble if they inhale mold spores, often requiring doctor visits and medication. Mold can also rot wood and drywall, causing structural damage to your frame or subfloor. Some mold and mildew can sometimes be cleaned with a bleach and water solution and a sponge. But many problems call for professional mold remediation and removal.
What Causes Mold Problems
Mold spores are everywhere indoors and outdoors. They only really become an issue when they have dark and damp places to take hold and multiply. Moisture is the trigger. You probably know the most common causes of moisture buildup, but there is an extensive list. What people may not think of as sources, like watering numerous plants at home and drip-drying your clothes, can factor in mold growth. Those situations with moisture create a conducive environment for mold spores to multiply and spread across surfaces.
Water damage from flooding or fires creates a perfect environment for mold growth in walls and under vinyl flooring, which may force the removal and replacement of water-damaged materials. In these and other cases, like a broken water hose that floods your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, you should call experts to dry out the affected areas with industrial dryers and other relevant equipment.
Mold exposure can cause respiratory symptoms that mimic pollen, dust, or pet dander allergies – runny nose, watery eyes, nasal congestion, but can be far more serious. You may also experience coughing and fatigue. Long-term exposure can make you more sensitive to mold spores and worsen future exposure. People with allergies, asthma, and compromised immune systems require mold issues to be solved to avoid exposure and health complications. Again, no one does it better than professional mold removal experts.
Preventing Mold Damage
You can avoid the need for mold damage removal and restoration work, but you cannot avoid mold. Mold spores are everywhere, including in your home or business. Those spores often won't cause any issues, but if conditions are right, they produce an outbreak of unsightly and unhealthy mold.
Persistent dampness is the enemy because that creates a perfect environment. Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of mold damage:
- Patch water leaks
- Clean up any standing water or damp spots, no matter how small
- Vent your bathroom when running the dryer or taking a hot shower
- If you have a laundry room, make sure to vent the dryer
- Wipe up moisture around the bathroom sink
- Use a vent fan in the kitchen when cooking to keep steam from turning into condensation.
- If you have a basement, use a dehumidifier to keep down the humidity level
- Your home's foundation should also slope away from the house to prevent water from pooling near the base or collecting under the house
Many of the same prevention tips apply to commercial buildings. In short, no matter the kind of home or building, keep the environment as dry as you can to eliminate water sources.
Prevention is the Key to Keeping Mold Under Control
Remember that moisture breeds mold, so the best way to avoid the health problems a mold infestation causes is to keep your home dry. Should a problem arise, it is recommended that any homeowner or business owner call a specialty mold remediation and removal service. Mold can be easy to control, but once a mold problem develops, it can cause all sorts of issues. If you have a significant issue with mold in your home or business, do not wait to get professional help. Call the mold remediation experts at SERVPRO at (615) 868-5324.
Removing and Preventing Mold Damage in Nashville

SERVPRO Offers Nashville Property Owners Mold Remediation and Encapsulation as a Preventative Measure
Nashville homes deal with water problems every year, but they often miss what can be a follow-up disaster. Usually, dormant spores become active and proliferate through a home after they absorb enough moisture.
A large share of Nashville mold damage starts behind walls and under the feet of homeowners. SERVPRO restoration teams often find themselves pulling down walls and crawling under homes to find the source of the problem.
In cases like these, the mold usually grows over surfaces, but it can dig into drywall and even the framing behind it if not caught quickly. While drywall is easy and cheap to remove and replace, wall framing can be more difficult. Technicians often have to scrape mold from the surface, and if the spores went deep, they could sand down the surface to remove the infestation. Wood studs can also be sprayed with an antimildew product after removing the mold and hyphae.
To reduce the risk of mold growth and contamination, SERVPRO recommends encapsulation for crawlspaces exposed to water. Team members start by examining the concrete walls for leaks and seeps. If they find one even as small as a pinpoint, they use hydraulic cement to seal them against further water intrusion.
Other specialists level the dirt floor to prevent pooling and then cover it with heavy, polyethylene sheeting. If needed, they use wood framing to hold the sheets in place. Next, they secure the ends of the sheets to the now sealed walls with a polyurethane caulk or a specially designed, two-sided, foundation tape. Team members continue using polyethylene sheets to seal off the walls. They secure them with the same caulk and tape and also use more wood framing for additional support.
After completing encapsulation, specialists use a moisture meter to determine if the humidity levels are at an acceptable level. If needed, they can use a dehumidifier to remove water from the air until the level measures as normal. To keep the humidity down, team members can leave a container of desiccant material to continue absorbing moisture. In extreme conditions or environments, a permanent dehumidifier can be installed in the crawl space. Less moisture means less chance of mold growth. The encapsulation also limits food sources for mold spores to develop into large colonies.
Our goal at SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville is to bring each home back to a clean condition. If you are still dealing with effects from the last storm or flood whether the result was mold damage or not, contact us at (615) 868-5324 today to begin the restoration process.

Removing The Water Source That Allowed Mold Damage In Your Nashville Home

Mold Damage In Your Home
When you have discovered mold growth in your Nashville home, your first instinct might be to question the cleanliness of your habits. This is a common misconception about mold and fungal growth, but its presence has virtually nothing to do with the cleanliness of the home that you keep. In fact, it is very simple for mold and microbial growth to happen, and it only requires moisture and warmth to achieve.
One of the typical locations to find mold damage in your Nashville home is down in the lower levels like your basement and cellar area. These areas are warm enough often to support the colonization of mold spores and tend to be the most susceptible areas for moisture and dampness due to their simple construction and vulnerable mortar joints.
Our SERVPRO professionals can help you to not only overcome the mold growth in your home by working to remove the present colony but also to aid in identifying the source of the moisture that allowed the growth in the first place. This inspection of your entire affected area helps to determine what areas need to get isolated with air scrubbers to prevent the spread of active spores and possible points of moisture penetration that allows for the dampness in the room.
If these vulnerable points are small repairs, our SERVPRO technicians can help to seal up these points to prevent further water penetration in the immediate future. For larger and more complex repairs and rebuilds, you have to seek out the services of a qualified residential contractor instead before the remediation work can take place.
Overcoming mold growth in your home is nothing that any homeowner wants to have to contend with, but an unfortunate reality for many people living in the area. The best thing that you can do is to keep close tabs on areas of your home that might be susceptible to moisture and dampness and work to stay ahead of it. Our certified applied microbial remediation technicians at SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville can help you to remove any colonies that you might encounter, and work quickly to return your home to its original conditions. Give us a call anytime you need us at (615) 868-5324.

Handling Mold Damage With Much Care in Nashville

SERVPRO Remediates Mold Problems Safely and Carefully
Mold damage may lead to health effects, and there is a need to seek professional remediation services. During this process, observing safety measures is a priority and making sure you do not spread the spores to unaffected areas in your Nashville property. To achieve that, getting the basics of containment right is crucial. The fundamental rule is to make sure you do not introduce an airflow from a contaminated area to a clean area thus prevent spreading the spores.
There are many techniques that out SERVPRO technicians use to establish containment during mold damage in Nashville. One of them is by setting up negative pressure on the area that needs containment to prevent the spread of spores. We can also seal HVAC vents and in some cases put in place plastic sheeting to act as containment barriers. Given that there are chances of contaminating the tools we use, disinfecting them is necessary and as a result, we establish cleans rooms to do that job. These isolated small areas also serve as a staging area for donning PPE personal protection equipment when required.
Dependent on the surface with mold growth, our SERVPRO technicians opt for appropriate removal procedures. When working on porous surfaces, in most cases, we remove the materials and discard them. An example of porous materials includes carpeting, insulation, fabrics, and drywall. When dealing with nonporous surfaces, we may decide to use HEPA vacuuming as long as the materials are dry. In some situations, damp wiping may be the best option. When wiping, we use detergents that sanitize the materials to help prevent the possibility of future mold growth cases. When raw wood is infested with mold colonies in a crawlspace or attic, we can use a method called soda blasting that rasps the growth with a pressurized bicarbonate jet spray.
It is also important to note that mold spore settle downwards and that is why our SERVPRO technicians start the cleaning process from the structure's top to its bottom. If there is airflow in the contaminated area, we usually clean surfaces towards the flow of air. Drying the surfaces then follows and the aim is to create unsuitable conditions for mold growth since the spore thrive well in moist conditions.

Controlling Common Precursors To Mold Damage In Nashville
5/2/2018 (Permalink)
Mold Damage
Most varieties of mold damage in Nashville require a source of excess water or moisture to begin growing, as their simple physiology needs relatively high amounts of food and water to facilitate rapid reproduction. Unfortunately, most homes in the area are ideal places for spores to grow and spread, as they contain favorable environmental conditions and ample food sources. Controlling water is thus the most important factor in stopping the spread of fungal colonies: watch out for these precursors, and few types of mold can survive in your home.
Leaks
Even a tiny leak can lead to catastrophic mold damage to your Nashville home if you are not careful. Leaks can come from appliances, holes in the building exterior, pipe ruptures, and many other sources. They provide enough water to feed a significant population of spores without drawing much attention from you. Be mindful of potential weak spots in your home where leaks might be likely and, if you have further concerns, contact SERVPRO to find out how we can help without advanced moisture detection tools.
Flooding
Flooding of any kind is a common precursor to mold, as floodwaters can be difficult to drain and dry out within a short time frame. SERVPRO stocks the equipment necessary to dry out your home before mold problems can develop, but response times are critical to our success. Be certain to call us right away if any part of your home floods.
High Humidity
Some types of mold can grow without a source of liquid water and subsist only off of high relative humidity in your home. While this can be difficult to control in cities like Nashville, where humid conditions are the norm, there are some steps you can take to keep moisture in check. Be sure to dry up spills instead of letting them evaporate, keep air circulating in the home, and if problems persist, contact us to find out how we can reduce humidity for you.
SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville responds quickly and professionally to any mold damage call. Call us at (615) 868-5324 so we can treat both the mold and the source of the problem and keep your home secure.

Tackle Mold in Your Nashville Home with The Help of SERVPRO
No homeowner is sufficiently prepared for finding mold or fungus growing in livable areas of their Nashville house. While there are undoubtedly several steps that could have been taken before now to try to avoid such an occurrence, nothing is ever full proof, and most people do not consider the possibility of fungal growth until long after it has reared its ugly head.
The trouble with encountering mold damage in your Nashville home extends far beyond the fact that it could cause health effects. In fact, this is often a clear indication of a broader problem with the structural integrity of your home, allowing water to get into areas where it should not be present. Since mold needs moisture and higher temperatures to thrive, there are significant portions of the year in the area where conditions are easily met to accommodate the growth of a colony in your house.
Our SERVPRO IICRC certified remediation specialists have been extensively trained to handle all kinds of mold that might grow in commercial and residential properties. With the right tools and expertise, our team can quickly get to work on the removal of the colonies and the neutralization of active spores trying to spread throughout the affected area to form new colonies and seat more organisms that require removal.
Once our SERVPRO team dons the appropriate personal protective gear, we get to work on quarantining the affected area to prevent the spread of spores. The process ensures that when scrubbers get used to clean the surfaces harboring mold colonies that they do not have an opportunity to spread elsewhere.
Locating the source of the mold problem is an essential step in the remediation process. Finding these vulnerable areas can allow our team to seal off access points that can keep this region of your home drier in the future, successfully helping to prevent future growth.

Understanding Mold Damage In Nashville Homes

Understanding Mold Damage
There is a misconception about mold held by many Nashville residents. They think that seeing it means their home is somehow dirty. Worse, is that their neighbors might think the same thing if they see a truck from a restoration company outside the house and they have not had a fire. The truth is that every home has some level of mold.
Actual mold damage in a Nashville home only happens when normally inert spores, smaller than the eye can see, somehow come in contact with enough moisture to expand. Even then, mold only grows after it finds a food source. Stopping mold means knowing how it grows and finding the best point to interfere in the process. At SERVPRO, we train our people extensively to do just that.
Mold spores usually cluster together. Each spore is so small that hundreds of them might be on the screen, you are reading now. Most spores are inert and remain that way unless they absorb water from some plumbing leak or even just a few drops of rainwater that found its way under the roof and formed a tiny smear in the attic. These drops can cause mold to expand and extend hyphae, which look like an almost microscopic root system.
Hyphae spread over surfaces, but do not get far unless they find a ready food source. Unfortunately, drywall and most other building materials make excellent meals. The hyphae then extend into the surfaces and begin to reproduce. New spore clusters start to form and eventually break away to expand the infestation.
Temperature is also a factor. Most types of mold grow in a range of 68 to 86 degrees, so nearly every home may be hosting a mold growth as you read this.
At SERVPRO, we learned years ago that eliminating the source of moisture returns even large spore colonies to their inert state. That is why our first action is to trace the origin of the mold and eliminate every water source as we follow the growth back. Inert mold is easier to clean and safer to remove if it has grown into ceiling tiles or other building material.
SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville has helped our neighbors deal with mold and other disasters for almost thirty years. If you need us, call today at (615) 868-5324 to schedule an appointment.

Mold Damage and Encapsulation In Nashville
7/25/2017 (Permalink)
Mold Damage and Encapsulation
Mold growth does not get the attention like floods or fire. A picture of a mold colony growing on a piece of wall frame is not shocking like a foot of water in a child’s bedroom or a burned-out roof. It can still cost the homeowner thousands of dollars and is responsible for millions in restoration costs every year.
Mold damage can start and grow in a Nashville home for weeks and months before residents see or smell anything. One of the places SERVPRO has dealt with over the years is the crawlspace. This area under the house usually stays ignored unless there is a broken pipe that needs repair or if residents use it for storage.
To stop mold and prevent future growth, we recommend encapsulation and drawing down the moisture levels. Encapsulation is an inexpensive method to seal off a crawlspace from mold and water. It is also our preferred method to prevent future mold growth. We begin the process by installing a water vapor barrier. Technicians hang up sheets of polyethylene and reinforce them with a polyester mesh. This method is very effective to lock out further moisture leaking in through the walls or dirt floor. We seal all of this in place with two-sided, foundation tape along the walls and a polyurethane caulk on the walls and floor. The caulk is particularly useful with a dirt floor. If the walls are high and require multiple sheets, our technicians can build-in a metal or wood frame to augment the tape and caulk.
With the crawlspace now sealed, we can effectively draw down the air moisture level. We use a combination of dehumidifiers and space heaters to accomplish this. Technicians set up the heaters to slowly raise the air temperature, which helps the dehumidifiers draw moisture from the area at a faster rate. Depending on the air content (humidity) and the machine used, we can draw 20 gallons of water from the air in the crawlspace every day.
Without encapsulation, any attempt to stop mold damage in your home’s crawlspace is only a short-term fix. SERVPRO of Madison /Goodlettsville wants to provide the best (and permanent) solution so you can return to your home with confidence. If you need us, call today at (615) 868-5324.

Containment Matters When It Comes To Mold Damage Remediation In Nashville

SERVPRO Helps Prevent Mold From Spreading During Remediation
Mold is an insidious visitor that can exist in your home unnoticed for a while before you realize it is there. In some cases, there are a few signs of mold, but the householder chooses to ignore them, thinking it is not that bad. Ignoring it is a mistake. The fungus that is left untreated carries the risk of damage to your home and belongings and can even cause health effects. The best idea is to deal with mold as soon as you notice there is a problem, and the most efficient way to do so is to put in a call to SERVPRO.
One of the tricky things about fungal growth is how easily it can spread. Spores can become airborne and spread throughout your home. During mold remediation, cleaning disturbs the spores. Any spores that are disturbed must be contained so they cannot move into other areas and cause further mold damage to your Nashville home.
Our technicians take the time to set up containment to stop further distribution of mold and protect the rest of your home. We train our IICRC-certified technicians in every aspect of remediation.
We establish physical barriers by using thick plastic sheeting. The sheeting is taped over doors to create a temporary block between the affected room and the rest of your home. The sheets are firmly secured in place to ensure the area stays protected. We also cover heating or air conditioning vents or other ducts. In some cases, it is also necessary to cover power outlets and light fixtures. The aim is to seal the room off from all adjacent areas.
SERVPRO teams use negative air machines. These are powerful HEPA filters which draw in contaminated air and then vent it outside of your property using a hose. Negative air machines, as the name suggests, do not only clean the air, they create a negative air pressure environment where the pressure inside the area being treated is less than that outside. The reason we do this is to prevent airborne mold from spreading throughout your home. The negative air pressure ensures it is drawn into the machine and then vented.
Establishing proper containment and negative air pressure is vital for successful mold remediation. SERVPRO takes great care at this stage of the process to properly prepare the area for further cleaning.
Do not let mold take hold in your home. Call SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville at (615) 868-5324 for help. For more information about this city click here.
Overcoming Mold Damage in Nashville
5/16/2017 (Permalink)
SERVPRO Technicians Remediate Mold Damage Weekly With Great Success
Mold is a hidden threat that can affect every house, apartment, and condo. When mold spores are inert, they are perfectly safe and of no concern, either to your home or your health. Inert spores are everywhere, causing no problem until they have enough moisture and a food source.
Dealing with mold damage in Nashville is a complicated and time-consuming task which requires a professional restoration service. SERVPRO has developed a four-step process to stop mold from growing further, cleaning existing spores from surfaces and removing them.
First, we contain the infestation by installing containment barriers around the affected area and establish negative air pressure inside of it. This pressure forces loose mold spores in the air outside of your home in the direction we push them. Our technicians seal the HVAC vents to prevent mold from contaminating the air ducts. They also establish areas called ‘clean rooms’ to store equipment and change into protective gear.
Next, we remove the contamination. Surfaces are either porous (drywall, fabrics, and carpets) or non-porous (glass, metals and most plastics). Technicians remove porous materials from the contaminated area, and either disposed of or clean them. We clean non-porous materials inside the contaminated area, and then remove the mold itself. Technicians wipe down the surfaces with a clean cloth or, for thicker molds, using a detergent or anti-fungal cleaner. Technicians then use vacuums with special, HEPA filters that can trap a single, microscopic spore inside.
After cleaning and removal, there is the matter of contaminated dust and settled spores. Response team members allow time for both to settle and then wipe down surfaces. Cleaning is repeated until our inspectors no longer register high mold content on their air meters. Finally, we dry the materials and the structure of the affected area. If we do not lower the humidity of the affected area to normal levels, then mold quickly grows again, no matter how well we clean otherwise. Technicians use a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry material, the structure, and the surrounding air.
Mold is not an obvious, visual damage like a house fire. In many cases, it is not seen or smelled until the infestation has grown over an extensive part of the structure. SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville is ready to help you restore your home back to its original state. If you suspect mold is in your home or can see it already; call us today at (615) 868-5324.

Investigating Nashville Mold Damage Risks and Infestations
4/25/2017 (Permalink)
SERVPRO's Quick Response After Damage can Minimize or Prevent the Spread of Mold
Fire and Flood disasters not only have their related problems, but each one also puts a home, apartment or condo at risk for mold infestation. Excess moisture from a storm or a fire hose provides the environment needed for spores to expand and grow. Determining the extent of the growth colony and how to clean and remove it needs a professional restoration service.
Combating mold damage in Nashville is more than just wiping spores off kitchen counters and pulling down infested drywall. SERVPRO interviews you and performs a complete inspection of your home before we pull a cloth out of a cleaning kit or grab a crowbar from a tool box.
Mold is not always visible, so our first question is “Why do you think you have mold”? The answer is usually, “I can smell it.” The musty odor that normally accompanies mold is a good indicator and helps our inspectors determine its location. Not all mold has a distinctive odor though, so our restoration teams use special air content meters to determine how many spores are in each part of the house.
If the answer to the question is “I can see it in my laundry room,” then our inspection becomes much easier. The same goes if the mold is in the kitchen or bath. Our inspectors start there and follow the line of mold growth up into the ceiling or behind the drywall; anywhere that excess moisture might be trapped. Almost as important is the question is “Have you had problems with mold before”? If the answer is yes, we look there first.
Next are the water questions “Where did water come into your home” and “When did this happen”? These apply to flooding, broken plumbing, and the response of the fire department. They let us know where to look for damage that goes unnoticed otherwise. If water drained from the first floor, down into the basement, that is just as important as the bathroom that has a streak of mold along the baseboard.
If we do not find and eliminate every source of excess moisture, then no amount of cleaning and removing the damaged structural property (drywall, baseboards, and under the sink cabinets for example) prevents mold from growing again within hours after we leave.
Responding quickly to remove mold is a task that SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville has decades of experience in accomplishing. That same experience taught us that we have to get every piece of information possible and that you are the best source to point our inspectors and technicians in the right direction. If you suspect a problem with mold in your home, contact us today at (615) 868-5324.
Easy Measures To Take Against Mold Growth In Nashville
4/7/2017 (Permalink)
Mold Growth And Mold Damage
Keeping mold out of the home is not an easy task, but with the right tools and determination, you should be able to reduce your chances for future mold damage drastically. Mold does not often grow unless some specific conditions are met, and keeping your home fortified against these makes it many times harder for mold to gain a foothold. Try using these methods in your home, and you might be able to avoid a remediation call to SERVPRO in the future.
Keep Things Dry
By far the most critical step to take against mold damage in Nashville is preventing water damage. The vast majority of mold calls we receive are caused by a leak, flood, or other water damage incident. Keeping your home's water systems repaired and operating smoothly along with regular checks for leaks and intrusions after storms can cut off an essential condition for mold growth. You may want to invest in dehumidifiers in bathrooms and around the home to reduce airborne moisture, as well.
No More Clutter
Not only is clutter hurtful to the eyes, but it can also be a causative factor for mold growth. Mold likes to grow in isolated, stuffy conditions, and piles of debris or belongings can provide these conditions perfectly. SERVPRO technicians frequently have to sort through unkempt areas or piles to find additional spots of mold growth, but doing so before mold has grown into a serious problem could prevent a larger disaster from happening.
Clean And Sanitize
Mold grows best on dirty surfaces, particularly when few chemicals exist to kill off weaker spores. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces around your home may help to stop mold from taking root there and in the immediate surrounding area. The bottom line is, make sure your home is kept in good condition, and mold should struggle to find a place.
When all else fails, SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville stands ready to remove and remediate mold in your home. Call us as soon as you have found signs of mold growth at (615) 868-5324.
Remodeling Can Lead To The Discovery Of Mold Damage In Your Nashville Home
3/16/2017 (Permalink)
Discovery Of Mold Damage
There are several stories about people discovering pieces of the past, some of which were very valuable, while they were in the process of remodeling their home. Others end up finding problems. One of these more unpleasant discoveries sometimes includes different types of damage. Instead of a treasure that may have paid for the remodeling costs that lead to its discovery, these can often result in increased costs, instead.
Nashville has a very rich history, and this might lead some to believe that any discovery must be good, but too often, adding on to a home ends up with the discovery of mold damage. Few construction crews are qualified to handle the disposal of mold contamination. Without an expert in mold remediation and containment, contamination of other areas in your home can happen quite easily. SERVPRO has the ability to work alongside other crews to remediate mold correctly, so future problems do not become a reality.
Our professional team members are trained according to IICRC standards, and then given experience working with other employees. Our customers receive the best of both types of training. When remodeling, or another kind of work, is ongoing, discoveries such as mold damage can be surprising. We can install temporary plastic sheeting if it has not already been put in place, or expand the area contained if needed. As the remodeling crew removes damaged materials, we can dispose of these pieces of drywall, wood, or other material correctly, and then check for more areas that are affected by mold patches.
Giving your family the gift of an improved home is one that can be costly but is also well worth the price. Mold can put a dent in your investment, but the incorrect handling of an infestation of mold can make matters much worse. SERVPRO of Madison / Goodlettsville wants to help you protect your family and your investment from harm. Call us at (615) 868-5324 whenever you find mold growing out of control in your home so we can remediate things correctly for you.

Assesing The State Your Home Is In Can Greatly Help With Restoration
Bathroom and household mold is a more frequent occurrence than people may realize until it becomes obvious. Bathroom mold is perhaps expected to a certain degree due to the frequent moisture and recurrent use. When it becomes excessive or does not undergo regular cleaning, the mold can become a problem that can get out of hand quickly. One way to effectively combat the growth of bathroom mold is to perform a regularly scheduled cleaning of bathrooms in the home. Despite best efforts and regular cleaning, mold can still settle into the grout of tiled surfaces. This may be the beginning of a recurrent problem. This is an area of concern if a bathroom was not sealed properly, particularly in tiled bathrooms with grout. The homeowner may or may not be aware if the bathroom was sealed.
The problem with mold damage is that the damage can exist beneath the surface and then migrate into other areas of the home. Unfortunately, this problem can range from mild to severe and occur without knowledge. This is when the experts need to be called to assess the problem.
Slow leaks in bathrooms may stream along grout lines and leak into drywall or find its way beneath flooring. Upstairs bathrooms of homes are particularly vulnerable because there is potential for water to leak into the ceilings of the lower floor. Water can travel a long distance across a home and end up leaking from ceilings or out of light fixtures and chandeliers. All of the areas exposed to the water are subject to growing mold. The mold can spread to other adjacent household structures causing additional unseen damage. Mold can cause health effects so there is a legitimate need to look for Madison mold damage anytime a leak has occurred. The presence of mold damage in a home is significant and can affect the chances of trying to sell a home.
Bathroom sinks may have leaking pipes that go undetected for long periods of time until obvious signs of water damage occur. Mold growth may build up on the surface of the sink pipes or in the areas where the water has leaked. It is critical to identify the source of the mold and take preventative measures to avoid the problem from reoccurring again. Homeowners need to take proactive actions when mold damage occurs and call the experts to assess the problem.
Our highly specialized team will evaluate the scene and determine an appropriate course of action and provide you with all options to solve the problem. Mold damage is severe and can cause health effects. When you experience a mold problem, call the experts at SERVPRO of Madison/Goodlettsville at (615) 868-5324.

Initial Assessment

Why It’s So Important to Clean Up Mold Damage in Nashville
5/5/2015 (Permalink)
As soon as you notice that mold is growing in your home, it is extremely important that you clean it up right away. Mold is a type of microscopic fungi that is adapted to reproduce quickly and grow rapidly. It can grow and thrive in almost any environment as well. Depending on its location, it can either be helpful or harmful. In a laboratory, it can give rise to beneficial substances such as penicillin. However, in your home, it can be a real danger to your health. Mold damage in Nashville is often caused by high moisture levels in the home. The following are a few tips on how to identify mold in your home, as well as some of the issues to which it can give rise.
Identifying Mold
You should quickly remove mold damage as soon as you see it in your home. However, it may be hard to tell whether or not a substance is mold. Discoloration is a key indicator; mold can come in a wide variety of colors. However, remember that stains may be caused by things such as outdoor pollution or soot rather than mold damage. There are also molds that are not visible but that emit an odor. It is recommended by many experts that even if you don't observe either of these signals, evidence of water leaks or extra moisture are indications of water damage problems, and you should be aware that mold can result.
The Importance of Cleaning Up Mold
There are many reasons why you should clean up mold damage sooner rather than later. It can cause real damage to materials inside your house. First, it will discolor or stain the material, and eventually, it will ruin it. Fabrics will be damaged and cardboard and paper will disintegrate. Structural damage and wood rot can also happen in your home. However, the most important reason to clean up mold in Nashville immediately is your health. There are types of mold that have been connected with illness after a certain amount of exposure. Allergic reactions are also possible. There are certain people who are more at risk, including elderly people, infants, pregnant women, and people with health problems.
If you find mold damage in your house, there are professionals who specialize in cleaning this up. It would be smart to call a mold specialist or water restoration specialists and schedule an assessment so that you can know more about your options.
