There’s no way around it. We need water for life, but one thing we don’t need it to do is cause damage to our home and property.
Did you know that there are many things that cause the different kinds of water damage?
For the period covering 2009 to 2015, The Travelers Companies Inc. reported that there were five common causes for filing homeowners insurance claims. They were:
- Exterior wind damage
- Non-weather-related water damage
- Hail
- Weather-related water damage
- Theft
Water damage claims two spaces on the list, which means it’s a common occurrence. It’s best to look at water damage as weather-related and non-weather-related.
Non-weather-related damage is the most common type of water damage in the home, caused by plumbing or appliance issues. Causing just as much damage but not as common is weather-related water damage, which is often caused by rain and snow.
In the home, the top five causes of water damage are plumbing issues, appliance malfunctions, bursting water pipes, aging water heaters and bad weather.
The price of water damage may be high, but just think how it could hit your wallet if you did not have sufficient coverage in your homeowners insurance plan. Generally, the following damages are covered by a standard policy:
- Damages caused by the weight of ice, snow or sleet
- Discharge and overflow of water, including accidental
- Rupturing pipes for a steam or boiler heat system
- Frozen plumbing and pipes
While water damage can be daunting, there are ways to help eliminate certain water-related issues.
You can use these proactive preventive maintenance suggestions as a guide to help keep your home high and dry:
- Applying water sensors and automatic shut-off valves
- Installing metal mesh connection hoses on the washer and dryer
- Keeping gutters and downspouts free of debris
- Ridding the hot water tank of buildup by flushing it every six months
- Keeping grease out the kitchen sink and drain
By utilizing these tips, you can make sure you are working to avoid some costly water damage in the future.
Water damage can be a nightmare to deal with, but fortunately, you will always have SERVPRO® of Madison/Goodlettsville on your side to help with the cleanup and restoration process.
